If you have AIDS or are HIV positive, you probably know the financial
burdens of health care insurance and drug costs. Talking about how to afford
the medical services and drug treatments associated with AIDS and HIV can be an
endless discussion.
But someone has been listening. And there are a few things you should know:
- If you have AIDS or are HIV positive and live in Illinois, you could be
eligible for two state-funded programs that can help with your medical care
expenses. The Illinois Department of Public Health would like to talk to you
about how it can help meet your needs through the AIDS Drug Assistance
Program and the Continuation of Health Insurance Coverage Program.
- The Continuation of Health Insurance Coverage Program helps people
who have AIDS or HIV and have left their jobs. Many people who no longer work
for an employer can still, by law, receive health insurance coverage through
their employers for 18 months. This program helps pay the monthly payments
(premiums) for the health insurance you continue to receive, including family
insurance that covers your spouse or children.
Call the Illinois Department of Public Health AIDS/HIV and STD
Information Hotline at 1-800-243-2437, TTY (hearing impaired use only)
1-800-782-0423, to find out more about these programs and how to apply.
