Notify your local health
department or the Illinois Department of Public Health immediately of a suspected or confirmed case of
smallpox. Report a suspected or confirmed case of adult (20 years or older)
chickenpox within 24 hours and suspected or
confirmed cases of chickenpox in a child (up to 19 years of age)
within seven days to the local health

- Incubation period is between 14 and 21 days after contact with a chickenpox
case.
- No illness precedes the chickenpox rash.
- The pocks are most numerous on the trunk.
- Pocks are seldom present on the palms and soles.
- The rash usually occurs in multiple crops of lesions, various stages of
development can be observed simultaneously on any part of the body.
- Scabs that are not infectious begin to form four to seven days after the
rash appears.
- Scabs fall off within 14 days after the rash begins.
- Pocks are more superficial.
- Vesicles collapse on puncture.
