Because of the documented presence of cancer-causing air pollutants from jet engines, cancer concerns exist for populations living near Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports. The concerns, however, are based on projected cancer risks from measured pollutants. This study examined actual cancer incidence observed in communities near the two airports.

An evaluation of colorectal cancer with emphasis on black/white comparisons was conducted using incidence data from the Illinois Department of Public Health's State Cancer Registry for 1986 to 1997 and Illinois mortality data over 1979 to 1998. Cancers of the colon and rectum rank among the top five for incidence and mortality among both blacks and whites in Illinois.

Several recent studies indicate that the cancer mortality rates in the U.S., after decades of continuous rise, began to decline after 1990. The purpose of this study is to examine whether cancer mortality trends in Illinois are conforming to the national trend and what cancer groups have contributed to the change.

This study of Hispanic identification on Illinois cancer death certificates for 1986 to 1996 was conducted using methods established from a comprehensive Hispanic identification study in the Illinois State Cancer Registry. The purpose was to establish a policy that defines the reporting of Hispanic cancer deaths in Illinois and is consistent with the reporting of Hispanic cancer incidence.
