The referral center helps in obtaining health and safety information on chemicals. CMA conducts studies, workshops and technical symposia; promotes safety; and operates the Chemical Transportation Emergency Center (CHEMTREC), which supplies guidance to emergency personnel on responding to transportation accidents involving chemicals.

This division assesses the health effects of exposure to hazardous substances or conditions in the home, workplace, or environment. Staff also develop resource materials for health professionals and citizens about exposure to hazardous substances or conditions. Staff also present educational programs to citizens and health professionals regarding environmental and occupational health. Staff review and interpret chemical- and concept-specific literature and develop special reports on key environmental issues.

This office provides technical support for assessing the effects of hazardous substances or conditions on the environment and public health. This includes reviewing hazardous waste site information, helping develop environmental regulations, and establishing cleanup objectives or levels for hazardous waste site remediation, spills, and property transfers.

The clearinghouse is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services organization, not an enforcement agency. NIOSH provides information to OSHA, which formulates regulations. NIOSH investigates hazards to human health and safety in the workplace. It also conducts research on methods to prevent disease, illness or injury in the workplace. Educational materials and occupational health training are provided.

National Pesticide Telecommunications Network (NPTN)

The network provides a toll-free service that can address a variety of issues about pesticides. NPTN, which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, is designed to provide accurate and prompt responses to requests for information, either on the telephone or by next-day mail. The network also distributes the EPA document, "Recognition and Management of Pesticide Poisonings.”

OSHA enforces workplace safety and health standards, supports research in occupational safety and health, and conducts workplace safety training programs. OSHA has regulatory authority over manufacturing, construction, longshoring, agriculture, law, medicine, organized labor, and private education. Staff can provide educational materials concerning occupational health.
