ROCKFORD NURSING HOME FINED

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has fined Fairview Nursing Plaza $10,000 (Statement of Violations) for failure to provide proper nursing care to its residents. The 213-bed skilled and intermediate care facility is located at 321 Arnold Ave. in Rockford.

As part of a complaint investigation, Department surveyors learned that a 97-year-old tube-fed resident, who had a "nothing by mouth" order, was taken to a hospital emergency department suffering respiratory distress following breakfast. Hospital staff removed a "chunk of bread" along with other food items from the resident's airway.

The Department ordered the facility to train its employees on the importance of residents' dietary restrictions.

Fairview Nursing Plaza has requested a hearing on the Department's action. A hearing date has not been scheduled.
