CANTON NURSING HOME FINED

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has fined Sunset Manor Nursing Home $5,000 (Statement of Violations) for failure to provide adequate supervision to a resident with a history of wandering. The 95-bed intermediate care facility is located at 129 S. First Ave. in Canton.

A Department investigation found that a 57-year-old resident left the facility unnoticed the night of Dec. 20, 1999, and was found walking a couple blocks away by a local policeman. The temperature at the time was 8 degrees. The resident was dressed only in a gown, shoes and socks.

All exit door alarms were functioning, but surveyors determined staff disengaged a back door alarm so they could exit the facility for smoking breaks.

The facility was ordered to implement a plan of correction that ensures all exterior doors are either equipped with an alarm or are under constant visual supervision when there is not an alarm or the alarm is deactivated.

Sunset Manor Nursing Home has requested a hearing on the Department’s action. A hearing date has not been scheduled.
