INDIVIDUAL ACTS OF HEROISM HONORED BY STATE

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health today honored 50 individuals for acts of courage as part of the state's 14th annual Emergency Medical Services Awards.

"These individuals acted quickly and selflessly in coming to the aid of persons caught in emergency situations," said Dr. John R. Lumpkin, state public health director. "Acting without regard for their own personal safety, these men and women exhibited a level of concern and compassion that is truly inspiring."

Honorees received certificates, signed by Gov. George H. Ryan and Dr. Lumpkin, as part of the Department's observance of Emergency Medical Services Week, May 20-26. The special week provides an opportunity for communities and organizations to honor those involved in emergency medical services.

"Emergency medical services personnel begin each day knowing their lives and the lives of others may be on the line whenever the alarm sounds," Dr. Lumpkin said. "All of us should be grateful for their dedication and courage in carrying out their responsibilities."

Nominations for the awards are solicited by the Department from police, firefighters, paramedics and others from throughout the state.

A special emergency medical services (EMS) leadership recognition award is being given to Rosemary McGinnis, the emergency medical services coordinator at the Community Hospital of Ottawa for the past 15 years. During this time, McGinnis has served on a number of Department committees concerning the state's EMS program, including the Intermediate Curriculum Committee, of which she is now chairperson. At the local level, she is active in EMS education and with the local school district.
