GRANTS TO LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS ANNOUNCED

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has awarded $14.1 million to the state's 94 local health departments for fiscal year 2002 to support the delivery of public health protection programs in their communities, Dr. John R. Lumpkin, state public health director, announced today.

"Local health departments are an important partner in the Illinois public health system," Dr. Lumpkin said. "The state's investment in these local agencies is a recognition of their significant contribution to preventing illness, thus ensuring the opportunity for our citizens to remain healthy."

The Local Health Protection Grants, which are distributed based on a formula that takes into account population and poverty, are used to fund programs to prevent foodborne, waterborne and other preventable infectious diseases.

The fiscal year 2002 grant includes a 2 percent cost of living increase that is effective April 1, 2002. Ninety-eight of the state's 102 counties, representing 99.5 percent of the population, are served by a local health department. Counties not served by a local health department are Carroll, Edwards, Richland and Warren.

In addition to the Local Health Protection Grants, the Department provides local health departments with other funds for a variety of programs, including women's health initiatives; prostate and testicular cancer; HIV/AIDS prevention, counseling and testing; lead screening; immunizations; and health promotion. The Department will also award $14 million in grants to local health departments in fiscal year 2002, up from $10 million this fiscal year, for tobacco prevention and control efforts.

The following is a list of local health departments and the Local Health Protection Grants they will receive for fiscal year 2002 (July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002).
