SUMNER FACILITY FINED FOLLOWING RESIDENT'S DEATH

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has fined Red Hills Healthcare Center $10,000 (Statement of Violation), for failure to adequately supervise a resident to ensure her safety and to properly train all staff in emergency medical procedures. The 82-bed skilled care facility is located at 1 Poplar Drive in Sumner.

Responding to a complaint, Department surveyors learned a resident was found unresponsive with her wheelchair safety device around her neck after having slipped down in her chair. Staff initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but discontinued the emergency procedure after 16 minutes without authorization to do so from appropriate medical personnel. Facility staff also failed to contact emergency medical services after initiating CPR.

The Department-ordered plan of correction required the facility to ensure all employees have either training or experience in their assigned jobs and to develop policies and procedures to be followed during medical emergencies.

Red Hills Healthcare Center has requested a hearing on the Department's action. No hearing date has been scheduled.
