| October 23, 2003 LAGRANGE NURSING HOME FINED FOLLOWING RESIDENT'S DEATH SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Department of Public Health has fined Victorian Manor Healthcare & Rehabilitation $10,000 (Statement of Violation), for failure to accurately evaluate a resident's medical condition and to provide necessary emergency services. The 203-bed skilled and intermediate care facility is located at 339 S. Ninth Ave. in LaGrange. Responding to a complaint, Department surveyors learned staff did not initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when a resident was found to be unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. After noting the resident's condition, paramedics were called and the nursing staff left the resident's room. Paramedics began CPR when they arrived and then transported the resident to the hospital where she died. The Department-ordered plan of correction required the facility to review it policies regarding emergency procedures, to train staff on emergency procedures and to ensure there is at least one staff person on duty at all times who has been properly trained to handle medical emergencies. Victorian Manor Healthcare & Rehabilitation has requested a hearing on the Department's action. No hearing date has been set. |
