BOURBONNAIS FACILITY FINED FOR MEDICATION ERRORS

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Provena Our Lady of Victory has been fined $10,000 (Statement of Violation) by the Illinois Department of Public Health for failure to properly administer medication. The 107-bed skilled and intermediate care facility is located at 20 Briarcliff Lane in Bourbonnais.

During an annual inspection, Department investigators discovered the facility did not properly administer medications to four residents, resulting in hospitalizations for two of the residents.

One hospitalized resident was given an incorrect dose that led to blood in her urine and the other resident who required hospital care became lethargic after a new medication patch was applied without an old patch being removed.

A third resident was to have her medication stopped for two days and then restarted, but the facility continued to provide the medication, putting the resident at risk for hemorrhaging. Another resident received two doses of her evening medications after an employee failed to note the drugs had been given.

A Department-ordered plan of correction required the facility to review its policies and procedures for administering physician-ordered medications and to provide training to employees on medical issues.

Provena Our Lady of Victory has requested a hearing on the Department's action. No hearing date has been scheduled.
