State public health director warns consumers about recalled frozen pot pies possibly linked to salmonellosis

ConAgra Foods voluntarily recalling all varieties of frozen pot pies

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, is warning consumers today about frozen pot pies that could be linked to a multi-state outbreak of salmonellosis. ConAgra Foods is voluntarily recalling an undetermined amount of all varieties of frozen pot pie products they produce under multiple brand names, including chicken, turkey and beef.

“If you currently have pot pies in your freezer, even if you bought them a couple months ago, you need to pay attention to this recall. Today’s recall includes several different brands of pot pies made by ConAgra Foods and all varieties. Salmonellosis can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may include chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days. Consumers should not eat these pot pies,” said Dr. Arnold.

Earlier this week, the federal Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert for these frozen pot pie products following an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health departments into a large cluster of illnesses caused by Salmonella. ConAgra voluntarily stopped making the pot pies October 9, but there is an ongoing investigation to determine the source of the contamination for this multi-state outbreak.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) currently has five cases that match the strain pattern for this outbreak, but continues to receive and investigate reports of suspected cases. Of the five Illinois cases, one is confirmed to have eaten a pot pie, another is confirmed to have not eaten a pot pie and the food histories of the remaining three cases have yet to be determined.

The following brands and all varieties, including chicken, turkey and beef, of frozen pot pie products are subject to this recall:

  • Banquet
  • Albertson’s
  • Food Lion
  • Great Value
  • Hill Country Fare
  • Kirkwood
  • Kroger
  • Meijer
  • Western Family

These frozen pot pies include all varieties in 7 oz. single serving packages bearing an establishment number “P-9” or “Est. 1059” printed on the side of the package.

Consumers with questions about the recall and what to do if they have these pot pies may contact the Toll-Free Hotline at (866) 484-8671.
