State public health director alerts consumers about Joe Caputo & Sons “Homemade Hot Giardiniera”

Jars of giardiniera recalled  

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Dr. Damon T. Arnold, state public health director, is warning consumers about the recall of eight ounce and 16 ounce jars of “Homemade Hot Giardiniera” prepared and sold at Joe Caputo & Sons market. The McHenry County Department of Health is investigating a potential problem in the processing of this product.

“Although Joe Caputo & Sons markets that produced this product are located in Algonquin and Palatine, there is the possibility people from outside McHenry County have purchased this product to take home with them. At this time there are concerns of potential food poisoning associated with the product so we to want get the word out that people should not eat this particular brand of giardiniera,” said Dr. Arnold.

Giardiniera is an Italian condiment used on salads and sandwiches and includes a mixture of pickled vegetables such as carrots, celery, onions and cauliflower in oil.

Consumers are advised not to eat this product but return it to the store for a refund. This recall is not associated with other brands of commercially prepared or packaged products of giardiniera.

No illnesses have been reported but an investigation into the product continues.
