TWO SOUTHERN ILLINOIS NURSING HOMES FINED

SPRINGFIELD, IL —The Illinois Department of Public Health has taken disciplinary action against two downstate nursing homes:

Energy Specialized Living Center was fined $10,000 for failing to provide adequate care for two residents, including a 34-year-old male resident who died of pneumonia. While investigating a complaint, Department surveyors found facility staff did not document giving the resident an antibiotic prescribed by a physician to treat respiratory congestion, or document the resident's worsening condition, for more than a month.

Facility employees also failed to ensure adequate care was given to a 64-year-old female resident who showed signs of dehydration and possible kidney problems but did not receive updated physician orders for more than a month.

Energy Specialized Living Center did not request a hearing on the Department's action.

Turner Manor was fined $10,000 after an annual inspection revealed the facility failed to properly supervise residents and to have residents examined by a psychologist in a timely manner to prevent resident-on-resident abuse. Examples include--
