JOLIET NURSING HOME FINED

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Department of Public Health has fined Glenwood Care Center $5,000 (Statement of Violation) for failure to maintain an exit door in operable condition. The 203-bed skilled care facility is located at 222 N. Hammes in Joliet.

As part of an annual licensure survey in July, a Department surveyor observed a fire exit door taped shut with duct and masking tape. Staff attempted to open the door, but were unsuccessful until a knife was used to slit the tape. Interviews with staff determined the door had been taped shut since the winter because of concerns about cold drafts.

State fire safety code requires that exits be readily accessible at all times. A Department ordered plan of correction called on the facility to continuously maintain exits free of obstructions or impediments for use in case of a fire or other emergency.

Glenwood Care Center has requested a hearing on the Department’s action. A hearing date has not been scheduled.
