EDITOR'S NOTE:The Illinois Department of Public Health will no longer issue a news release each time a dead bird, mosquito pool or animal is identified as positive for West Nile virus. A news release will only be issued for a county upon identification of its FIRST positive bird, mosquito pool or animal. Once a positive bird, mosquito pool or animal is identified, it is apparent that West Nile virus is present, at a minimum, in that county. A complete listing of all West Nile virus positives for 2001 (when the virus was first detected in Illinois) and 2002 are posted on the IDPH Web site www.idph.state.il.us. The site contains Illinois maps that indicate those counties where positive birds, mosquito pools or animals have been identified and the counties that have submitted birds, mosquito pools or animals for testing, but the results were negative. Also on the Web site are details on the city where the bird, mosquito pool or animal was collected and the date it was found.Tom Schafer Chief of Communications Illinois Department of Public Health 217-782-5750 |
